Days after approving the creation of the position, the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, chose on Saturday, a member of the Executive Committee of the Organization, Hussein Al -Sheikh, as his deputy in the organization’s presidency, and in the presidency of the State of Palestine.
“President Hussein Al -Sheikh nominated his deputy and the executive year has been approved,” said Wasel Abu Yusef’s executive committee member.
This appointment would pave the way for the Sheikh to succeed Abbas.
According to an official statement, the Executive Committee unanimously approved the nomination submitted by President Abbas, and another meeting is scheduled to be held next Saturday to choose a new secretary of the Executive Committee from among its members.
Starting a comprehensive national dialogue
In his speech during the meeting, President Abbas stressed the importance of starting a comprehensive national dialogue in which the Executive Committee of the Organization and the Central Committee of the Fatah movement with all Palestinian factions, with the aim of achieving national reconciliation and promoting unity, participates in the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organization as the legitimate and only representative of the Palestinian people.
The Palestinian Central Council met on Wednesday and Thursday in Ramallah, and approved the creation of the position of Vice -Chairman of the Executive Committee, after the amendment of the thirteenth article of the Palestinian Basic Law related to the members of the Executive Committee.
The Palestinian Central Council consists of 188 members, a body that has its weight in the Palestinian political system, and it consists of representatives of the Palestinian factions represented in the Palestine Liberation Organization, which does not include Hamas and Jihad.
Abbas, 89, heads the PLO and the Palestinian Authority since the death of leader Yasser Arafat in 2004, but for years he has not made any internal reforms, including the choice of his deputy, according to Reuters.

During his presidency, the Palestinian General Affairs Authority has emerged with the rank of minister, and it is in charge of organizing the relationship with the Israeli side in the daily life affairs of the Palestinians.
He was assigned in the year 2022 to the Secretariat of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and was the official of the negotiation department with the Israeli side after the death of Saeb Erekat in the year 2020.
The Palestinian President was appointed before the Sheikh as Chairman of the Palestinian Embassy Committee abroad.
