Indian police said on Tuesday that at least 20 tourists died during an attack by gunmen in Kashmir.
According to Reuters, the attack took place in Bahgham, a famous tourist destination that attracts thousands of visitors every summer.
One of the sources said that the death toll reached 20, while another source stated that the number reached 24, while Thai said that 26 people were killed in the attack.
A senior police officer told the Associated Press that at least four gunmen shot dozens of tourists from a nearby site.
The two officers said that at least 36 others were injured, and the condition of many of them was dangerous.
Omar Abdullah, Prime Minister of the Jamo and Kashmir region, said in a post on the “X” platform: “We are still working to determine the number of dead, so I do not want to go into these details … but this attack is much greater than any attack by civilians in the past few years.”
The nationalities of the dead have not yet been known.
An unknown armed group claimed responsibility for the attack in a message on social media.
Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah said that he would rush to Kashmir to hold a security meeting.
In Washington, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump had been informed of what a White House spokesman described as a “brutal terrorist attack.”
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs later stated that Trump “expressed his full support for India in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous attack to justice.”
