The Palestinian Resistance Movement, Hamas, announced today, Tuesday, the assassination of one of its prominent leaders in an Israeli air strike carried out by a plane targeting south of the Lebanese capital Beirut.

The movement stated, in an official statement, that the raid took place on Tuesday morning, and resulted in the death of Hussein Atwi, a prominent leader in the armed wing of the factions of the Sunni group known as the Fajr Forces, while he was going to his car from his home to his office.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli army regarding the operation, according to Reuters.
It is noteworthy that the Fajr forces fired rockets from southern Lebanon towards Israeli territory during the war that lasted for a full year and ended with an agreement to a ceasefire last year, and the Israeli raids resulted, during that period, the death of a number of members of the group.
Since the truce signed, Israel has continued to implement air strikes inside Lebanese territory, mostly targeting Hezbollah sites or weapons warehouses. The Israeli forces also maintain five military sites on the peaks of the hills in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese authorities, along with Hezbollah and Hamas, have condemned the Israeli raids and the military presence inside Lebanese territory, and considered them a breach of the truce and a violation of the country’s sovereignty.
