The Algerian authorities asked 12 employees at the French embassy to leave Algerian territory within 48 hours, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Nawil Barrow, on Monday, explaining that the decision responded to the arrest of 3 Algerians in France.
“I ask the Algerian authorities to return from these expulsions that have nothing to do with the ongoing judicial procedures” in France.
He added: “In the event that the decision to expel our employees will not have another option, but to respond immediately.”
“The Algerian decision was officially informed of the French diplomatic mission, without the Algerian government until now an official clarification of the reasons for this measure.
This step comes in light of the abundance of relations between the two countries for months, amid repeated disputes over immigration and visas files, and the colonial memory file, in addition to the different positions on regional issues such as Libya and the Sahel region.
It has not yet been issued an official comment from the French side regarding the Algerian decision, or if it will be met with a similar procedure.
