The number of asylum applications registered throughout the European Union, Norway and Switzerland witnessed a decrease of 11% in 2024, but it remained over the barrier of a million requests for the second year in a row, according to the annual report issued by the European Union Agency (EUAA).

According to “Euro News”, 1,014,420 requests were generally submitted for international protection last year, compared to 1,143,437 requests registered in 2023.

The report shows that approximately half of the requests (48%) out of one million requests made by people were the chances of obtaining asylum historically low; This indicates the possibility of the authorities rejecting these requests.

This trend is likely to strengthen the fears of the European Union member states; Brussels called for the reform of the current legislation in order to accelerate the expulsion of foreigners whose requests were rejected, including immigrants for economic purposes who come to the continent in search of better living conditions and not to escape persecution or mistreatment.

The European Commission supported the controversial idea of building camps (also known as “return centers”) outside the European Union to transport people whose requests were rejected.

This month, the amended European instructions on the deportation of migrants or the so -called return orders will be revealed.
