The Electricity and Water Authority confirmed that the National Electricity and Water Holding Company has no direct relationship, whether with the operations of the authority and the services it provides to citizens, or the Ministry’s operations.
In response to the question of Representative Mahdi Al -Shuwaikh, the commission indicated that the National Electricity and Water Holding Company was established based on the powers entrusted to the Electricity and Water Authority under Decree No. (20) of 2024, which added Article (2) bis to Decree No. (98) of 2007 regarding the establishment of the Electricity and Water Authority, a company wholly owned by the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
She explained that the purpose of establishing this holding company is to enable the authority or the government in the future to own stakes in the companies of the electricity and water production stations that will be established, knowing that the holding company does not practice any operating activity in its name, but its primary role is limited to owning or participating in the ownership of investments and companies operating in the fields of electricity, water or related fields.
The authority continued that the holding company is still in the founding stage, and given the nature of its work as a holding company, it will not carry out any operations directly, which means that the annual cost of operating this company will be limited, and will be limited to some administrative expenses.
With regard to the company’s ownership, it is fully owned by the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain as previously clarified.
The authority pointed out that the work of the holding company is limited to the ownership of companies and investments as shown in advance, and therefore the holding company has nothing to do with the cost of the electricity unit or the water unit, and it also has nothing to do with the pricing of the citizen in his first residence, which is determined by the government in accordance with the mechanisms in force in this regard.
