Meta, the company that owns Facebook, announced that the Facebook Like and Share buttons on external sites will stop working, starting February 10, 2026, in a move that ends an era that has continued since the launch of these tools in 2010.

The company explained, in a post on its blog, that site administrators are not required to take any additional measures, although they can choose to remove the buttons ahead of time. Upon the deprecation date, these extensions will become a 0 x 0 pixel element on sites, meaning they will practically disappear from users without causing any technical errors.

These additions were previously used to facilitate the sharing of articles and increase interaction on external sites via the Facebook network, but the use of these tools gradually decreased with the development of the Internet and the emergence of more diverse sharing methods.

Meta confirmed that Facebook has today become a smaller part of the company’s broader operations, and relying on a single social network is no longer the primary way to operate websites and digital content, noting that this step reflects the change in the digital landscape and the development of methods of interaction via the Internet.
