Dr. Mohamed Maait, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and former Minister of Finance, said that the Egyptian state may not need to obtain further financing from the International Monetary Fund after the end of the current program, noting that Egypt is the owner of the new economic reform program, and the Fund can be an advisor to it in this matter if Egypt deems it so.

Maait added, during a symposium in Cairo 24, that the International Monetary Fund’s work in the coming period may be as an advisor to Egypt’s economic reform program, to follow up on the Egyptian economic performance if Egypt requests that, but, of course, the relationship with the Fund continues as is usual with other countries, from following up on the program, technical support, and reviewing Article Four of the Egyptian economy. Adding that the current economic indicators are much better than what we were in the period between March 2022 and February 2024.

Maait explained that resorting to the International Monetary Fund would be an exceptional matter, adding that in 2019 we did not need any new financing from the Fund, but the high crises, represented by the Corona virus and the subsequent global inflationary wave, and the Russian-Ukrainian war, negatively affected the global economy and not the Egyptian one alone.
