The British government announced the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, after more than 12 years of restrictions affecting Syrian officials.
This decision came in conjunction with the UN Security Council’s vote in favor of a US draft resolution to lift sanctions on President Al-Sharaa and the Syrian Minister of Interior, in a step that fundamentally transforms the international position towards Damascus.
This comes days before the Syrian President’s expected visit to Washington, DC, and his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Commenting on these developments, US President Trump said: “President Shara has done a good job. It is a difficult region and he is a strong man. We agreed very well, and a lot of progress has been achieved regarding Syria.”
For his part, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa confirmed in an interview with the media that the lifting of sanctions came as a result of joint diplomatic efforts, noting that Saudi Arabia, Turkey and other countries contributed to this transformation, provided important support to Syria and contributed to its repositioning regionally and internationally.
Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations also expressed his country’s thanks to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its support for the Syrian position in international forums.
It is expected that President Al-Shara’a’s upcoming visit to Washington will constitute a turning point in the course of Syrian-American relations, amid international anticipation of its outcomes and repercussions on the regional scene.
