The Faculty of Archeology at Cairo University continues its cultural season through the Department of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities, which organized a one-day symposium under the title The History of Science in Egypt and the Ancient Near East, under the patronage of Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadiq, President of Cairo University, and Dr. Mahmoud Al-Saeed, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, and under the supervision of Dr. Mohsen Saleh, Dean of the Faculty of Antiquities, and Dr. Salwa Kamel, Head of the Department of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities.
The symposium began with a welcome speech from the Dean of the College and the Head of the Department of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities, during which they thanked His Excellency the President of the Republic for his interest in ancient Egyptian civilization through the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which returned the world’s attention to Egypt and its ancient civilization, stressing that this historical event contributed to revitalizing tourism and highlighting the greatness of Egyptian heritage.
They also thanked the President of the University for his continued support of the scientific activities held by the college, and to all faculty members and the department’s supporting staff for their efforts in making the cultural season a success.
The symposium witnessed three scientific sessions that included a group of specialized research that dealt with the scientific, medical, astronomical and architectural aspects of ancient Egypt and the Near East, and were as follows:
In the first session, Dr. Mona Zuhair Al-Shayeb began the session with a research paper entitled “Architecture of Facilities in Ancient Egypt,” and Dr. Imad Abdel Azim discussed in his study “Sciences and Knowledge in the Ancient Near East: Military Architecture in the New Kingdom as a Model.” Dr. Hiam Hafez Rawash spoke in her research paper entitled “Children’s Surgeries in Ancient Egypt,” while the first session concluded with Dr. Fawzia Abdullah presenting her research on “Medicine and Treatment Methods in Ancient Iraq.”
As for the second session, Dr. Mona Zuhair Al-Shayeb reviewed a research entitled “Astronomical Knowledge among the Ancient Egyptians,” and Dr. Dalia Ismail discussed in her study “Observing Celestial Bodies in Ancient Iraq between Science and Superstition.” Dr. Mona Abdel-Alim Al-Baghdadi discussed in her paper “The i3dt rnbt epidemic in ancient Egypt,” and Dr. Al-Shaima Mohamed Hassan discussed in her research “Nursing in Ancient Egypt,” and the second session concluded with a research by Dr. Tarek Sayed Tawfik on “Mummification in Ancient Egypt.”
In the third session, Dr. Maysara Abdullah Hussein discussed in his research “Paths to Light Note and Anatomical Knowledge in Ancient Egypt,” and Dr. Hala Farid Al-Asmar spoke in her research on “Geography among the Ancient Egyptian.” Dr. Abdullah Saeed also presented his study entitled “Nutrition Sciences in Ancient Egypt through Some Archaeological Sites,” and the session concluded with Dr. Ahmed Abdel Maqsoud’s research on “Funerary Architecture Arts in the Kingdom of Lydia.”
At the conclusion of the symposium, Dr. Mahmoud Ibrahim presented recommendations that emphasized the importance of studying the history of science in Egypt and the Near East, linking it to modern knowledge, and encouraging cooperation between specialists in various archaeological and scientific fields. Dr. Salwa Kamel also thanked the participating professors for the distinguished research they presented, while Dr. Mohsen Saleh honored them and handed them certificates of appreciation, praising the efforts of the Department of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities and its prominent role in enriching the scientific and research movement within the college. The symposium witnessed a large attendance from college professors, master’s and doctoral researchers, and students.
