The administration of the Ethiopian Afar region accused the Ethiopian Tigray Liberation Front forces of launching a new attack on its territory, confirming that they had taken control of 6 villages and bombed civilians with mortar shells and heavy artillery, in the latest indications of renewed tension between the two regions two years after the end of the civil war in the country, according to media reports.
The Afar administration said that Tigray forces attacked the Megali region and opened heavy weapons fire on civilian herders, warning that it would carry out its defensive duty to protect itself if the attacks continued.
Renewed tension in Ethiopia
For its part, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front has not issued any official comment on the accusations yet, despite attempts to contact it by international media.
This escalation comes about two years after the end of the devastating civil war between Tigray forces and the central government (2020-2022), which claimed the lives of an estimated 600,000 people and displaced about a million others, while relations between Tigray and the capital, Addis Ababa, and neighboring regions remain tense.
Last May, the Ethiopian Electoral Commission banned the Tigray People’s Liberation Front party from engaging in any political activity for technical reasons, while last month the central government accused the Front of establishing relations with Eritrea and preparing to launch a new war against Ethiopia.
