Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, met with Dimitris Kopoulouzis, Chairman of the Greek Kopoulouzis Group of Companies responsible for implementing the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Europe via Greece, and his accompanying delegation, at the Ministry’s headquarters in the Administrative Capital, to discuss and follow up on developments in the implementation and development of work in the electrical interconnection project between the electricity network in Egypt and the European electricity network via the electrical interconnection with Greece, as well as completing funding by the European Union Commission, and supporting and strengthening aspects of cooperation and partnership in the field of new and renewable energies.
Egypt and Greece discuss the latest developments in the electrical interconnection project with Europe
This came within the framework of the action plan to transform Egypt into a regional center for energy exchange, and in light of the National Energy Strategy and the work program of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, by diversifying energy sources, relying on renewable energies, maximizing returns from natural resources, expanding the establishment of solar and wind energy plants, and adopting electrical interconnection projects with the networks of neighboring countries to export and exchange energy, and one of the most important axes to ensure the security and stability of the electrical network.
The meeting discussed the latest developments in the Egyptian-European electrical interconnection project through the direct interconnection project with Greece and negotiations with a number of European partners, including the European Investment Bank and Greek banks, who expressed their willingness to finance the project in light of the cooperation agreement that was signed weeks ago in the presence of the Ministers of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt, and Energy and Environment in Greece, to complete the technical and economic studies for the electrical interconnection project.
The meeting discussed the future of renewable energies, maximizing returns and benefiting from natural resources in Egypt, as the project is based on exporting 300 megawatts of renewable energy from Egypt to Europe through the establishment of a number of solar and wind energy projects, within the framework of the state strategy and the action plan of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy for the expansion of renewable energy projects. The meeting included lengthy discussions about the locations of establishing projects and extending transmission lines for generating energy, as well as the results of meetings between the electrical network operators in Egypt and Greece and between the project developer, developing and strengthening the unified network in the two countries and the extent of readiness to accommodate New capacity to transfer energy to the European electrical grid.
Dr. Mahmoud Esmat said that Egyptian-Greek cooperation in the fields of renewable energy gains its importance from the strong, distinguished and extended relations and partnership between the two countries, and in light of the strategic importance of the project as it is a bridge for transferring clean energy from Egypt to the European Union. He included the project in the list of electrical interconnection projects funded by the Union, stressing the strategic direction to support and enhance electrical interconnection projects and integration with the networks of neighboring countries.
He explained that the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Greece is of great importance for achieving sustainable development and comes within the framework of a general strategy for electrical interconnection with the European electrical network so that Egypt becomes a regional center for energy exchange and a bridge for transferring and exchanging electricity between the three continents of the world.
He pointed out the importance of interconnection projects in general and the interconnection project with Greece in particular, based on the vision of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and in implementation of the government policy that aims to rely on renewable energies and reduce the use of traditional fuels, which is what the interconnection project with Greece is based on, to maximize returns and properly manage and exploit renewable energy sources, adding that there is a desire and work by the governments of Egypt and Greece to end the project due to the economic benefits it will bring to the two countries.
