Bahrain Airport signed a letter of intent with DHL to build a hangar for aircraft maintenance, repair and refurbishment

Dr. Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transport and Communications, confirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain is moving steadily towards consolidating its position as a leading center in the field of aviation and logistics services in the region, noting that the signing of the letter of intent between the Bahrain Airport Company and DHL Express on the sidelines of the Gulf Gateway Investment Forum 2025 in the Kingdom of Bahrain reflects investors’ confidence in the advanced infrastructure that the Kingdom possesses, and the attractive and stimulating environment it provides for the growth of the aviation and related services sector. He added that this strategic project to construct an advanced facility for maintenance, repair and renewal of aircraft represents a qualitative step in the process of developing the aviation system in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and embodies the fruitful partnership between the public and private sectors in supporting sustainable economic development, stressing that the Ministry is continuing to implement initiatives aimed at enhancing the Kingdom’s competitiveness and expanding the aviation sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product.

This came on the occasion of the signing of the Bahrain Airport Company, the entity responsible for managing and operating Bahrain International Airport, and DHL Express, a letter of intent to construct a facility for aircraft maintenance, repair and refurbishment in the western apron of Bahrain International Airport, during the Gulf Gateway Investment Forum 2025, which will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay in the Kingdom of Bahrain from 02 to 03 November 2025.

The letter of intent was signed in the presence of Dr. Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transport and Communications, and Mr. Khalid Hussein Taqi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gulf Air Group, between Mr. Ahmed Janahi, Acting Director of Bahrain Airport Company, and Mr. Abdulaziz Buspit, CEO of DHL for the Middle East and North Africa.

According to the agreement, Bahrain Airport Company will allocate a site in the western concourse of Bahrain International Airport to DHL Express to construct a hangar for the maintenance, repair and renewal of aircraft in the Middle East and North Africa region at Bahrain International Airport, in accordance with international standards and technical regulations. This hangar will enable DHL Express to expand its capabilities in maintaining its global fleet of B777 and B767 aircraft, and to provide maintenance services to other DHL airlines, which include A-CHECK inspections and the replacement of major equipment: engines, auxiliary power units (APU), landing gear, and thrust reversers, as well as increasing its capacity to support its global operations in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in line with the strategy followed in its global centers. In this regard, Mr. Khalid Hussein Taqi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gulf Air Group, stressed the importance of this strategic partnership with DHL Express, noting that the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul hangar represents an important step in the group’s journey to consolidate the position of the Kingdom of Bahrain as a major regional center for air cargo and an advanced service center on a global level that will attract more investments and attract the skilled workforce to the Kingdom, thus enhancing the group’s vision for developing the aviation sector and its strategic efforts to diversify the economic portfolio in the Kingdom.

For his part, Mr. Abdulaziz Bousbet, CEO of DHL for the Middle East and North Africa, indicated that this facility represents an important strategic step in the company’s journey to continue developing its network, thus enhancing the quality of its services at the local and regional levels, explaining that this huge achievement will reflect positively on all parties concerned, and will consolidate the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position among the countries of the region as a major and advanced service center for air freight. He expressed the company’s pride in its ability to improve its logistical capabilities, and its aspiration to attract a skilled workforce that will contribute to continuing the process of success.
