Many citizens are searching for reasons for raising the electricity meter by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, to avoid falling into violations that may lead to the meter being withdrawn or service interruption.

In this context, the Electricity Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency explained the cases in which electricity meters are raised, and the procedures followed to ensure regular bill collection and fair energy consumption.

First: Late payment of electricity bills

Procrastination in paying bills is one of the main reasons for raising the electricity meter, and it includes the following cases:

The meter will be raised if the user is late in paying one bill for a month from the date of the claim.

If two consecutive bills are not paid, the meter will be removed after two months of delay.

If failure to pay continues repeatedly, the meter will be permanently withdrawn as an administrative measure.

Second: Refrain from allowing the meter to be read

The Ministry raises the meter if the user refuses to allow it to be read for two consecutive months, to ensure the accuracy of consumption calculations and prevent tampering.

Third: Requesting the meter to be raised by the user

Users are allowed to voluntarily request that the meter be raised in certain cases such as:

Long-term travel abroad.

Demolish or rebuild the property.

In these cases, a new meter is installed later under a new measurement.

Fourth: Using electricity illegally

The meter is lifted immediately when theft of electrical current, illegal connections without the use of an official meter, or tampering with wires or current transformers are detected.

Fifth: The meter is not valid

If it is proven that the meter is broken or inoperable during the technicians’ inspection, the Ministry will remove it and replace it with a new one to ensure accuracy of measurement and consumption.

Sixth: Installing a prepaid meter as an alternative

In the event of repeated payment violations or meter tampering, the Ministry installs a prepaid meter instead of the traditional meter, and the costs of the new meter are paid in easy installments to ensure continuity of service with prepayment for consumption.

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy warns citizens against delaying payment of bills or refraining from allowing meter reading, stressing that these measures aim to:

Achieving justice in energy distribution.

Ensuring continuity of service for committed consumers.

Anti-theft of electricity.
