In a step described as unprecedented in the world, Australia decided to ban those under 16 years of age from using social media.

The Australian authorities attributed the decision to “parents’ peace of mind and the opportunity for children to learn about their identity.”

Before implementing the law, the government launched an awareness campaign for parents and children by publishing it on the Internet, television, radio, and billboards, including advice on how to keep children away from social media.

The campaign also includes lists and ideas to start conversations about how to facilitate this transition, including following influencers’ websites instead of their social media accounts.

Australia agreed to ban social media for children under the age of 16 after an emotional debate that swept the country, setting a benchmark for jurisdictions around the world with one of the strictest rules targeting big technology companies.

The law forces giant tech companies to prevent minors from logging in, or the company will be fined up to $32 million.
