The wooden pedestrian bridge linking the two banks of the Al-Salam Canal in the Al-Ghanayma area in the village of Ayed, south of Port Said, is witnessing a state of severe neglect, as it has become composed of dilapidated wooden planks and broken concrete columns, making it an imminent danger that threatens the lives of passers-by, especially children who cross it daily on their way to schools and worshipers heading to the Ghoneim Mosque in the area.
A dilapidated wooden bridge threatens the lives of students and worshipers in the village of Ayed, south of Port Said… and the people are crying out for help.
The bridge is the only outlet linking the eastern and western banks of the canal, which forces people to use it despite its extreme danger, as students walk over it every day in a dangerous scene, over the canal’s waters filled with weeds, without any safety means to protect them from falling.
The people confirmed that they are waiting for a disaster every day, as male and female students and worshipers pass over this bridge, which has no walls or a flat floor, which threatens them to fall into the water, in addition to the suffering of the elderly, and the inability of people of determination to cross over it, which makes the situation extremely dangerous and inhumane.
One of the residents says that residents are sometimes forced to accompany their children while crossing the bridge for fear that they will fall, while others resort to traveling long distances to reach the nearest safe crossing, which increases the hardship of daily life in the area.
Prevention is better than regret
The people of the village of Ayed and Al-Ghanayma called for help from Major General Staff Moheb Habashi, Governor of Port Said, to quickly intervene and assign the competent authorities to inspect the bridge and rehabilitate it safely, stressing that its repair is an urgent necessity to protect the lives of citizens, and that “prevention is better than regret.”
