President Sisi wrote on the official page on the social networking site Facebook: I extend my sincere congratulations to Sanae Takayashi on the occasion of her election as Prime Minister of Japan, and as the first woman to hold this high position in the country’s history.
President Sisi continued: I confirm my aspiration to work closely with her in order to activate and develop the strategic partnership between our two countries, enhance areas of joint cooperation in various fields, and continue constructive coordination on regional and international issues, in a way that contributes to achieving peace, stability and prosperity for our two friendly peoples and the international community.
Sanae Takaichi is the first female Prime Minister of Japan
Ultra-conservative Sanae Takaichi was elected on Tuesday as Japan’s first female prime minister, shattering the country’s glass ceiling and preparing the country for a strong shift to the right, according to Reuters.
Takaishi, a close confidant of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and an admirer of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, received 237 votes in the House of Representatives elections to choose the next prime minister, beating the majority of the 465-seat House.
Her victory represents a pivotal moment in a country where men still have overwhelming influence, and is also likely to pave the way for a sharper right-wing on issues such as immigration and social issues.
