US President Donald Trump announced a new agreement aimed at reducing the cost of the famous obesity treatment drugs Wigovi and ZyBound, and expanding insurance coverage to include more patients in the United States, according to Reuters.

These drugs are considered a modern generation of obesity treatments, and are known as GLP-1 receptor activators, which have been widely popular in recent years due to their high effectiveness in reducing weight and improving health indicators associated with it. However, their high prices have been an obstacle to a large segment of patients benefiting from them.
The cost of high doses of these medications is about $500 per month, which has made access to them limited, especially in light of the disparity in insurance coverage between states and different health care programs.
According to what the US administration announced, the new agreement includes including obesity medications within the federal health insurance program Medicare starting next year, which will enable hundreds of thousands of patients to obtain these medications at a low cost.
The statement also indicated that additional discounts will be applied gradually to patients not included in the program.
Officials explained that the initial doses of the new versions of these treatments will be offered at a price starting at $149 per month if they are officially approved, in a move aimed at expanding access to treatment and encouraging the prevention of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.
