Parliamentary elections in Iraq will begin today, Sunday, where Iraqis will choose the 329 members of the House of Representatives, according to media reports.
In his statements, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani said that the government’s success in conducting the electoral process according to its decree and on its constitutional date is an “important event” for the state.
Al-Sudani added, during his visit to the headquarters of the Joint Operations Command in Baghdad, that these elections confirm the country’s democratic path, stressing that Iraq is committed to the peaceful transfer of power.
No curfew will be imposed on polling day
Al-Sudani confirmed in his statements, published by his media office, that a curfew will not be imposed on polling day, adding: There must be a high flow of movement and allow movement.
Al-Sudani, who took office in 2022, leads the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, and focuses his electoral campaign on improving services, fighting corruption, and consolidating state authority.
The State of Law coalition, led by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, still has influence and competes with the coalition to which Al-Sudani belongs to impose hegemony within Shiite circles.
