Dozens of indigenous protesters stormed the COP30 climate summit venue on Tuesday, clashing with security guards at the entrance to demand action on climate and forest protection.

The COP30 climate summit is held

The demonstrators, chanting angrily, demanded access to the United Nations complex, where thousands of delegates from countries around the world are participating in this year’s United Nations climate summit in the city of Belém in the Amazon region of Brazil, according to what was published by Reuters.

“We cannot eat money,” said Gilmar, an indigenous leader from the Tubinamba community near the lower reaches of the Tapajós River in Brazil, who uses only one name. “We want our lands free of agribusiness, oil drilling, illegal miners, and illegal logging.”

The demonstrators dispersed shortly after the clash, and were part of a group of hundreds of people who walked to the demonstration site. Security guards later allowed the delegations to leave the place, after previously asking them to return inside until the place was evacuated, and the United Nations assumed responsibility for security inside the complex.

Earlier this evening, a group of protesters broke through the security barriers at the main entrance to the Conference of the Parties, causing minor injuries to two security personnel, and minor damage to the venue, a conference spokesperson said in a statement.
