The United States submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to lift the sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab, in preparation for al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington and his expected meeting with US President Donald Trump next Monday at the White House.

According to the text of the draft seen by Reuters, the date for voting on it has not yet been set, as its adoption requires the approval of nine of the fifteen members of the Council, without any of the permanent members (Russia, China, the United States, France, or Britain) using the veto.
For months, Washington has been urging the Security Council to ease the sanctions imposed on Syria, as part of what it described as efforts to support stability and peace in the region.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt said that Al-Shara’s visit comes within President Trump’s efforts to achieve peace in the world, adding that during his recent visit to the Middle East, the US President took a historic decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria to give it a real chance for peace, noting that Washington sees tangible progress in this direction under the new Syrian leadership.
