The Cairo News correspondent revealed that the Sudanese army began a large-scale military operation, and this comes a few hours after the army announced the restoration of control over areas in Sudan.
Cairo News also reported that the Sudanese army is extending its control over the town of Umm Dam Haj Ahmed in North Kordofan state.
In a separate context, the United Nations Human Rights Council agreed, on Friday, to send an independent fact-finding mission to the city of El Fasher, following reports of atrocities being committed by the Rapid Support Forces fighting the Sudanese army there. The decision came during a council session in Geneva.
Rapid support crimes in Sudan
Last month, the Rapid Support Forces invaded army positions in El Fasher, its last stronghold in North Darfur, taking control of the city after a day that witnessed rape, torture, and summary executions of hundreds of people, according to UN and field reports.
The new mission will work to identify those responsible for the violations and preserve evidence of possible crimes, in an effort to ensure that it can be used in any future trials, according to what was explained by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who described what is happening as a blatant display of cruelty used to subjugate entire populations.
Turk said that the atrocities unfolding in El Fasher were expected and could have been prevented, but they were not prevented, and they amount to the most serious crimes.
