Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he told the Premier of Ontario not to run a television ad against US tariffs, which angered US President Donald Trump and prompted him to suspend trade talks between the two countries.

Carney confirmed that he personally apologized to Trump during a dinner on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, noting that the US president felt “offended” by the advertisement that was prepared in Ontario and broadcast in the United States, in which he criticized Trump’s tariffs, citing a speech by former US President Ronald Reagan, according to US media.

When asked about Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s reaction to his request to stop running the ad, Carney responded, saying: “Well, you’ve seen the result of it.”

He added in a press conference held at the end of his nine-day visit to Asia: “It is something I would not have done.”

On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced the end of all trade talks with Canada after what he described as a fraudulent announcement in which former President Ronald Reagan spoke negatively about tariffs.
