Zahran Mamdani, a young representative of the left wing of the Democratic Party and a fierce opponent of Donald Trump, was elected mayor of New York in an election that was the first electoral test for a Republican president.

Mamdani, 34 years old, is ahead of former state governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, according to preliminary results issued by the New York City Board of Elections, making Mamdani the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States when he officially takes office on January 1.

With his victory, Mamdani also becomes the first person of South Asian descent, and the first African, to hold this position. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century.

Mamdani’s unexpected rise is evidence for Democratic Party supporters who are calling for more progressive and left-wing candidates, rather than supporting centrists in the hope of winning back swing voters who have deserted the party.

Mamdani has already faced scrutiny from Republicans nationally, including President Trump, who have been quick to paint him as a threat and the face of what they say is a more radical Democratic Party.

In Virginia, moderate Democrat Abigail Spanberger easily won the governor’s office.

Spanberger, 46, a former congresswoman and former CIA officer, will be the first woman to hold the position of governor of Virginia after she easily defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears.

In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the governor’s election.

These three races provided the Democratic Party with an opportunity to test various campaign tactics a year before the 2026 midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake.

Since President Trump’s victory last year, Democrats have found themselves out of power in Washington and struggling to find the best way out of the political impasse.

All three candidates focused on economic issues, especially affordability. But Spanberger and Sherrill are on the moderate wing of the party, while Mamdani campaigned as a progressive and a voice from a new generation.
