42 migrants, including 29 Sudanese, died in the latest tragedy off the coast of Libya, as a result of the sinking of a boat that had left the Zuwara area more than a week ago.
According to what the International Organization for Migration announced today, Wednesday, the ill-fated boat was carrying 49 migrants. Among them were two women, and only seven migrants were able to be rescued during a search and rescue operation carried out by the Libyan authorities.
According to the survivors’ accounts, the boat left on the third of this month, but after about six hours, the strong waves caused the engine to malfunction, leading to the boat capsizing.
After drifting at sea for six days, only seven men were rescued, including four from Sudan, two from Nigeria, and one from Cameroon.
The victims also included eight from Somalia, three from Cameroon, and two from Nigeria.
According to the organization’s data, 378 migrants died this year in crossings to the central Mediterranean, which mainly included boats departing from the coasts of Libya and Tunisia.
