Commander of the Royal Medical Services and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Treatment Abroad, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Brigadier General Physician Sheikh Fahd bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, said that the Royal Medical Services has witnessed, in recent years, a qualitative development that has strengthened Bahrain’s position as an advanced medical center at the regional and international levels, through the introduction of modern surgical and robotic techniques and the development of diagnostic and specialized care systems. He pointed out in an interview with “Al-Watan” on the occasion of Bahraini Doctor’s Day, which the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrates on the first Wednesday of November. Every year, to the inauguration of the Hugo RAS robotic surgical system, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, and the VELYs robotic device for knee joint replacement, in addition to the operation of the high-resolution NAEOTOM Alpha PCCT imaging device, hybrid operating rooms and a group of advanced diagnostic technologies.

The Commander of the Royal Medical Services added that these achievements also included developing home health care services, operating new specialized centers and clinics, enhancing the capabilities of the Bahrain Oncology Center in cell therapy and marrow transplantation, and raising the efficiency of centers for treating heart and kidney diseases and oncology in children, with the Military Hospital, King Hamad University Hospital, and the Bahrain Oncology Center obtaining national and international accreditation, which confirms commitment to the highest quality standards in medical services.

Brigadier General Physician Sheikh Fahd bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa confirmed that these developments coincide with the celebration of Bahraini Doctor’s Day, which embodies the values ​​of loyalty and appreciation for the efforts of Bahraini doctors and their pioneering role in raising the level of health care and building an advanced system that places humans at the top of national priorities.

Empowering the Bahraini doctor

The Commander of the Royal Medical Services said, “Bahraini Doctor’s Day is a sublime national occasion in which we celebrate doctors who carried an honorable trust and a noble humanitarian message, and worked wholeheartedly for the health of the individual and society. This day constitutes an affirmation of the role of the Bahraini doctor in achieving an advanced and sustainable health renaissance for our dear country.”

He added, “On this occasion, we are pleased to extend the highest expressions of loyalty and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the country and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, may God protect and preserve him, and to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister, may God protect him, and to His Excellency Field Marshal Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defense Force, may God protect him, for their continued support and strategic vision that established A national health system that matches the best international systems.”

He continued, “The Bahraini doctor has proven his high competence and established professionalism in various precise medical specialties, and he was able to provide an honorable model in clinical, research and training efforts, which reflects the state’s investment in developing national cadres and qualifying them according to the latest scientific and clinical curricula.”

Medical successes and technical development

Regarding medical successes and technical development, Brigadier General Physician Sheikh Fahd bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa confirmed that the Royal Medical Services was able during the past years to achieve qualitative achievements that strengthened its position as a leading medical center, and the most prominent of these achievements are:

– Robotic surgeries in the military hospital:

“In a pioneering step, the Royal Medical Services launched the Hugo RAS robotic surgical system, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, to be an advanced platform for performing precise surgeries in multiple fields including urology, gynecology, and general surgery. The system is characterized by high accuracy, flexibility, and advanced control during operations, which contributes to reducing complications, shortening the recovery period, achieving better cosmetic results, and reducing the risk of infection. The system also supports medical training via artificial intelligence to simulate surgery, documentation, and educational purposes, thus enhancing the doctors’ experience Bahrainis and develops their practical skills.

The Royal Medical Services also launched the VELYs robotic device, the first of its kind in the Middle East, to assist in knee joint replacement surgery. This device represents a qualitative leap in the accuracy of surgical operations, reducing complications and accelerating recovery, and complements the medical innovation system provided by the Royal Medical Services to patients.”

– Modern diagnostic and surgical techniques:

* Operating the first NAEOTOM Alpha PCCT tomography device in the Middle East for high-resolution cardiac and neurological imaging.

* Introducing the high-tech KLS Martin maxillofacial joint.

* Providing the latest generation of Sentiva™ VNS vagus nerve stimulators for the first time in Bahrain.

* Operating integrated Hybrid OT rooms for advanced surgery.”

– Health infrastructure and community services:

He said that “in line with a comprehensive vision to raise the quality of care and enhance patient comfort,” the following was done:

* Launching an integrated home health care service for patients and the elderly.

* Providing laboratory sampling service at home.

* Launching the waiting screen service in emergency departments via the RMS Medical application in accordance with the Canadian system

* Operating a modern sports medicine center.

* Developing the women’s health clinic and the specialized clinics building.

* Operating the 1.2T open MRI machine, the first of its kind in Bahrain.

* Opening the mini-school for children at the Military Hospital and King Hamad University Hospital to ensure the continued education of children during treatment.

– Excellence in oncology and cell therapy:

Regarding excellence in oncology and cellular therapy, he stated that “the Bahrain Oncology Center achieved a remarkable medical achievement by obtaining international accreditation from Vertex as a recognized center for cellular therapy and bone marrow transplantation, in addition to applying advanced gene therapy for blood patients, which placed Bahrain among the leading countries regionally in this type of vital treatments.”

– Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa Specialized Heart Centre:

He said that the most prominent cardiac surgeries are performed by skilled and highly trained Bahraini personnel, including open-heart surgeries, interventional catheterization, valve replacement, coronary artery surgery, and cardiac treatment for children and adults.

– His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalid Center for Kidney Diseases:

He touched on the His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalid Center for Kidney Diseases, explaining that “advanced dialysis services are provided using the latest devices and modern technologies in accordance with the best international standards by skilled Bahraini hands, with a focus on the patient’s comfort and safety to achieve the best therapeutic results.”

– Oncological diseases in children:

Regarding oncological diseases in children, he explained:

* The Pediatric Oncology Clinic provides advanced care for children with various oncological diseases, including brain and skin tumors, gastrointestinal and liver tumors, hematological and lymphomas, and bone and soft tissue tumors.

* Children’s treatment is supervised by a competent Bahraini medical team, equipped with scientific experience and advanced surgical skills, with psychological and educational support programs to ensure a comprehensive and safe treatment experience.

– Obtaining national and international accreditation:

“The Military Hospital, King Hamad University Hospital, and the Bahrain Oncology Center affiliated with the Royal Medical Services have all received accreditation from the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA), confirming these facilities’ commitment to the highest standards of safety, quality, and clinical governance.”

Medical agreements and cooperation

Regarding medical agreements and cooperation, Brigadier General Physician Sheikh Fahd bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa explained that “the Royal Medical Services has expanded its partnerships and agreements with specialized local, regional and international bodies, in a way that enhances the exchange of scientific expertise, develops therapeutic programs, provides the latest medical technologies, and supports scientific research programs and continuous training, ensuring the provision of the best medical care at the level of the Kingdom and the region.”

Regarding the organ transplantation program and the life-saving system, the Commander of the Royal Medical Services explained that “the organ transplantation program represents in the Royal Medical Services a pioneering humanitarian model based on:

– Comprehensive management of organ transfer and transplantation operations.

– Intensifying national awareness campaigns about organ donation.

– Performing kidney and liver transplants and tissue transfers according to the highest international standards.

– Training national medical teams in cooperation with international centers.

This program is considered one of the most noble medical programs that gives patients a new lease on life and protects the human and social fabric.”

Estimating the national workforce

The Commander of the Royal Medical Services was keen to praise the national workforce, adding, “On this occasion, we can only appreciate the efforts of the sincere Bahraini cadres who have worked with sincerity and dedication over the past years, and have contributed directly to the development of health systems and services in the Kingdom of Bahrain. These achievements and future plans are nothing but the culmination of the hard work and continuous dedication of the management and employees of the Royal Medical Services, who always strive to develop medical and technical capabilities to ensure achieving the highest levels of quality and health care for every patient.”

The Commander of the Royal Medical Services concluded his interview with Al-Watan by saying, “On this day, I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all our doctors and health personnel for their loyalty, generosity, and continuous efforts to serve patients and improve our health system.
