On Thursday, the Cambodian authorities evacuated hundreds of residents of a village located on the disputed border with Thailand, the day after a citizen was killed in an exchange of fire between the two sides, according to DPA.
Local authorities reported that clashes broke out yesterday, Wednesday, in a border area in Banteay Meanchey Province, northwestern Cambodia, resulting in the killing of a Cambodian man named “Dee Nai” and the injury of 3 others.
Deputy Governor of the province Lee Suvannarith said that about 250 families were evacuated from the village of Prey Chan to a Buddhist temple about 30 kilometers from the border, as a precautionary measure to avoid further casualties.
The incident came two days after a Thai soldier was seriously injured by a landmine explosion while he was on patrol in another border area, which prompted Bangkok to hold Cambodia responsible for the incident and announce the suspension of the ceasefire agreement that was reached with partial mediation by US President Donald Trump.
The border region between Thailand and Cambodia has witnessed recurring tensions for years. Due to disputes over border demarcation, the most recent of which was an armed conflict that lasted 5 days last July, and claimed the lives of dozens of soldiers and civilians on both sides.
