Today, Friday, the US Treasury Department announced the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his Interior Minister Anas Khattab, a day after the UN Security Council took the same decision.
The US Treasury explained on its official website that its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) included an update regarding the removal of Al-Sharaa and a letter from the US sanctions lists.
Yesterday, Thursday, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution to lift sanctions on President Al-Sharaa and his Interior Minister Anas Khattab. The Council adopted this resolution after it was a draft resolution submitted by the United States, with the approval of 14 of the 15 member states, as China abstained from voting.
An upcoming visit by the Syrian President to the United States
This coincides with the announcement of an expected visit by Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa to the United States, as White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt stated earlier this week that US President Donald Trump intends to meet Al-Sharaa at the White House next Monday, noting that the visit falls within the framework of Trump’s efforts for peace in the world.
She added: When the president was in the Middle East, he took a historic decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria to give it a real chance for peace, and I believe that Washington sees the need to make good progress on this level under the new Syrian leadership.
This will be the Syrian President’s first visit to Washington, and the second to the United States after his participation in the work of the United Nations General Assembly last September in New York, where he became the first Syrian president since 1967 to deliver a speech before the international organization.
