The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced that the security forces carried out a series of pre-emptive operations across the country targeting cells affiliated with ISIS, and resulted in the implementation of 61 raids and the arrest of 71 people suspected of belonging to the organization, in addition to seizing quantities of weapons and explosive materials, according to what Reuters reported.
A Syrian security spokesman said that these operations come as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security and pursue remnants of the terrorist organization in various Syrian regions.
The upcoming visit of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa
These developments come ahead of the upcoming visit of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Washington, where he is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss Syria’s joining the US-led international coalition against ISIS.
Reuters had previously quoted informed sources that Washington is preparing to establish a military presence at an air base in Damascus, within the framework of a US-brokered security agreement between Syria and Israel, while an American official confirmed that his country is constantly evaluating its military deployment in Syria to ensure the effectiveness of the fight against the terrorist organization.
