Chinese airlines announced today, Saturday, the cancellation of their flights to Japan and refunding their costs to passengers, against the backdrop of tensions between the two countries over Taiwan.
On Saturday, the largest Chinese airlines announced a full refund for flights on Japanese routes after Beijing advised its citizens to avoid traveling to the country, which led to an escalation of the diplomatic dispute sparked by the Tokyo Prime Minister’s comments regarding Taiwan.
Tensions between China and Japan
In a related context, Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese State Council, confirmed on Friday that Japan and its Prime Minister are not in a position to make irresponsible statements on the Taiwan issue, as well as issue threats and attempt to obstruct the issue of China’s reunification.
Chen reiterated that Taiwan is sacred Chinese territory, that the Taiwan issue is a Chinese internal matter, and that resolving the Taiwan issue and achieving the complete reunification of China are a common aspiration for more than 1.4 billion Chinese, stressing that how to resolve the Taiwan issue is a matter entirely subject to the discretion of the Chinese people, and no interference in it from any external force is permitted.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently said that the Chinese mainland’s attempt to use force against Taiwan could represent a situation that threatens Japan’s survival, as she claimed.
Her statements include the possibility of military intervention in the Taiwan Strait. Despite strong objections and protests from China, Takaichi refused to change her position and refused to retract what she said.
The spokesman said that Takaichi’s unjustified statements represent attempts to interfere in affairs across the Taiwan Strait, are a denial of China’s victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese aggression, and a challenge to the international order after World War II.
Chen said that the Chinese government and its people will never accept, tolerate or condone this matter, warning that Japan must immediately correct its mistakes and retract its statements, otherwise it will face all the consequences resulting from its position.
The spokesman warned Japan of crushing defeat if it dared to use force to interfere in the Taiwan issue, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.
