The Israeli army announced on Saturday evening that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited the Gaza Strip, as the ceasefire in the Strip entered its second day.
The army said in a statement that Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir conducted a field tour in Gaza with “the American envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and the commander of the US Central Command (Centcom), Brad Cooper.”
Fox News reported that Witkopf and Cooper visited an Israeli army site inside Gaza, after reaching an agreement on a ceasefire in the devastated Strip.
The network reported that the goal of the visit was “to ensure the completion of the withdrawal agreed upon within the agreement with Hamas.”
“I just returned from a visit inside Gaza to explain how we move forward in establishing a civilian-military coordination center led by Central Command, which will coordinate activities to support post-conflict stability,” Cooper said in a statement.
He added: “The sons and daughters of America in military uniform are answering the call to achieve peace in the Middle East, in support of the directives of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces at this historic moment.”
Cooper added: “This major effort will be accomplished without the presence of American forces on the ground in Gaza.”
An initial deployment of 200 American soldiers has begun in Israel, to help monitor the ceasefire in Gaza under the peace plan drawn up by US President Donald Trump.
The US Army will coordinate the work of a multinational force that will be deployed in Gaza.
