The death of a young Turkish woman, under mysterious circumstances, has turned into an insoluble mystery, after experts’ efforts that have continued for a whole year failed to unlock her mobile phone.
Rogin Kabaş disappeared on September 27 of last year in the city of Van in southeastern Türkiye, before search teams found her 18 days later on the shore of a lake in the region.
It seemed that the university student had committed suicide or been swept away in some way, but her family rejected that story, and remained behind the investigations that have continued to this day, despite more than a year having passed since her disappearance.
On the one-year anniversary of her discovery on October 15 of last year, a new forensic report revealed traces of DNA on the young woman’s body, belonging to two men.
The new report reinforced suspicions that Rogin’s death was not natural, and may have been a crime, which prompted the Turkish Minister of Justice, Yilmaz Tunç, to issue a statement in which he revealed the latest results of the investigation into the case that concerns many Turks.
The minister explained that the court examining the case requested the opinion of an additional expert from the Forensic Medicine Institute in Istanbul after the issuance of a medical report identifying two different types of DNA on the young woman’s body.
The Turkish minister added that foreign and Turkish experts are still trying to unlock the mobile phone that Rojin was using, and it was found near the lake next to a bottle of water and a piece of candy.
Investigators believe that opening the phone may end the mystery surrounding Rogin’s death, leaving her family in confusion throughout that period, after medical reports, surveillance camera recordings, and communications tracking failed to determine a conclusive cause for Rogin’s death.
