The United States has imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his son Nicolas Petro, First Lady Veronica Alcocer, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced.

The US Treasury statement said: The following individuals have been added to the Office of Foreign Assets Control list: Alcocer Garcia, Veronica del Socorro, Benedetti Villaneda, Armando Alberto, Pietro Bor Gos, Nicolas Fernando, Pietro Orrego, and Gustavo Francisco.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said: The sanctions include the wife of the President of Colombia, his son, and one of his close associates, and Petro allowed the drug cartels to expand and refused to stop this activity.
Picent added: Since the Colombian president came to power, cocaine production has escalated in Colombia and flooded America with drugs.
For his part, Colombian President Gustavo Petro described the US sanctions imposed on him as completely contradictory.
Earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro sent a strong message to US President Donald Trump, in which he called for an end to the crime against humanity in the Gaza Strip, stressing the need to protect civilians, especially children.
In a statement on his official page, which carried a sharp humanitarian tone, Petro said: Humanity demands an end to the crime against humanity in Gaza, and we cannot allow the killing of children, adding: Your wife or daughters should tell you that it is not acceptable to kill children, as my daughters told me that clearly.
