The Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Security Committee approved the proposal with a desire to allocate alternative and external routes for heavy trucks and tighten control over their adherence to using the right lane of the street.
For its part, the General Traffic Department confirmed that it is making all its efforts in the streets and in monitoring the movement of cars, noting that finding alternative roads is within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Works, and not within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior.
She pointed out that all trucks must adhere to the right lane, and are monitored by the General Traffic Department or private security cameras on the streets to monitor any wrong behavior.
As for the Ministry of Public Works, it stated that it always seeks to provide the highest levels of traffic safety for all users of the road network in the Kingdom and to facilitate the flow of traffic on the main and secondary streets, as international standards are followed to classify streets and determine speed, type and size of vehicles allowed to cross on the road network.
She indicated that it has become difficult to provide additional lanes for trucks only; This is due to the lack of sufficient spaces on the current road network, confirming the presence of many public services that limit the expansion or provision of special lanes for heavy trucks.
She pointed out that the General Traffic Department prevents trucks from passing through the main and secondary streets during the morning and evening peak periods, noting that the Ministry has prevented the passage of trucks in residential neighborhoods in a large number of areas in coordination with the General Traffic Department, municipal councils, and the Capital Secretariat Council.
