The activities of the first day of the conference on implementing the Arab plan to prevent and reduce the dangers of drugs on Arab society from a social perspective, which was hosted by one of the treatment centers affiliated with the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Abuse, witnessed the holding of the second session under the title “Executive measures for the Arab plan to prevent and reduce the dangers of drugs to Arab society,” which was moderated by Minister Plenipotentiary Tariq Al-Nabulsi, Director of the Development and Social Policies Department of the League of Arab States, and a member of the secretariat. During the session, Dr. Amr Othman, Director of the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Abuse, who is responsible for preparing the Arab Plan for Drug Prevention, spoke about the implementation mechanisms of the Arab Plan, reviewing the institutional and technical framework that is being adopted in coordination with Arab countries and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, to ensure that the plan’s objectives are translated into practical, applicable steps.
Othman pointed out that the plan is based on a preventive approach based on scientific evidence, and aims to strengthen early awareness programs, expand the scope of treatment and rehabilitation, in addition to supporting social integration programs for those who have recovered, which contributes to protecting young people and enabling them to participate in sustainable development.
The session also discussed ways to strengthen the Arab partnership in confronting the phenomenon, and the integration of roles between government institutions, civil society and the media, with an emphasis on the Egyptian vision that leads this joint Arab effort through its field experiences in combating addiction and reducing the demand for drugs.
The session concluded by emphasizing the importance of launching a clear-cut executive action plan that includes mechanisms for follow-up and evaluation, to ensure the achievement of the goals of the Arab plan on the ground, within a framework of sustainable Arab cooperation.
