The British company GlaxoSmithKline announced that it raised its profit and sales expectations for the year 2025, after its medicines for treating HIV and cancer achieved strong growth that exceeded expectations, which led to the company’s shares rising by 4.3% to record their highest levels since May 2024.

According to Reuters, this positive performance came despite a 15% decline in sales of the Shingrix anti-shingles vaccine in the US market, which was offset by significant growth in other global markets. Total vaccine sales amounted to 2.68 billion pounds during the quarter ending on September 30, exceeding analysts’ estimates of 2.55 billion pounds.

CEO Emma Walmsley, who is preparing to hand over her duties to her successor Luke Mills early next year, announced that the company is moving steadily towards achieving annual growth in revenues by 6% to 7%, and an increase in basic earnings per share by 10% to 12%, noting that expectations take into account the impact of the new US customs duties on the pharmaceutical sector.

Despite the pressures facing vaccine sales within the United States due to government changes and the reduction in federal funding for research, Walmsley stressed that vaccines will remain a long-term strategic pillar within the company’s activities.

GlaxoSmithKline seeks to achieve revenues of more than 40 billion pounds by 2031, compared to current analyst expectations of about 34 billion pounds. Core earnings per share were 55 pence on total sales of £8.55 billion in the third quarter, beating market estimates.

Analysts believe that the company’s strong performance represents a successful exit for the outgoing CEO, and enhances investor confidence in the next stage, especially with the focus on developing innovative medicines in the fields of oncology and immunity, in addition to expanding into emerging markets to compensate for the slowdown in sales in the United States.
