The Faculty of Mass Communication at Cairo University witnessed the discussion of the doctoral thesis submitted by researcher Amani Ezzat, entitled The Effect of Binge Watching Drama via Electronic Platforms on Patterns of Exposure to Traditional Media. The researcher obtained a doctoral degree in Mass Communication with distinction, with first class honors, with course recommendation and exchange between universities.
The doctoral thesis by Dr. Amani Ezzat was discussed at the Faculty of Information, Cairo University, under the supervision and discussion of an elite group of specialized professors, namely: Dr. Hassan Imad Makkawi, former dean of the Faculty of Information, Cairo University, as supervisor and president, Dr. Howaida Mostafa, former dean of the Faculty of Information, Cairo University, as discussant, and Dr. Heba Shaheen, dean of the Faculty of Information, Ain Shams University, as discussant.
The objectives of the study were:
1- Determine the extent to which binge-watching drama via electronic platforms affects patterns of exposure to traditional media
2- Identify the motives behind the Egyptian public’s tendency to binge-watch drama via electronic viewing platforms.
3- Determine the most important emotional satisfactions that the audience achieves from binge-watching drama on electronic platforms.
4- Description of the type of dramas that are binge-watched on electronic platforms.
5- Evaluating the most important technical and creative factors that electronic viewing platforms rely on to attract a larger segment of the audience from the point of view of dramatic and cinematic content makers.
6- Determine future scenarios for both traditional television and electronic viewing platforms; This contributes to providing a comprehensive vision and deeper understanding of the mechanisms for developing media content distribution and production processes, and also helps in identifying different mechanisms for dealing with each scenario for each medium separately.
Low rate of traditional TV viewing
The study reached a set of main results, including a decrease in the rate of watching traditional television and a decline in the percentage of watching drama through it. The results confirmed that a large percentage of respondents enjoy binge-watching drama via digital platforms and their preference for this type of viewing at the expense of watching drama via traditional television. The study concluded that a large percentage of respondents accept the possibility of replacing traditional television with electronic platforms, and for these platforms to replace traditional television.
The study also found that the largest percentage of respondents preferred to watch Egyptian drama via electronic platforms, at 79.4%, followed by American drama, at 50.4%. The percentage of respondents who preferred Turkish drama was 36.1%, and 19.7% of respondents stated that they preferred Korean drama, while 19% of respondents stated that they preferred watching Spanish drama.
