The American pharmaceutical company Merck announced a huge plan to expand its investments in the United States by more than $70 billion, as part of a strategy aimed at strengthening its capabilities in scientific research and local pharmaceutical manufacturing, according to Reuters.

Huge industrial expansion in Virginia and New Jersey

The company explained that it has already begun construction of a new $3 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Elkton, Virginia, as part of its total investment package. The facility is expected to provide about 500 job opportunities, up from previous estimates of 300 jobs.

Merck plans to invest an additional $3 billion in developing biologics and small molecule manufacturing sites across the United States, in addition to an investment of more than $3.5 billion in its headquarters in Rahway, New Jersey.

The company indicated that it has allocated $1 billion to establish a new factory in Delaware to produce biological medicines and the famous cancer drug Keytruda, which will contribute to creating more than 4,500 new jobs. Merck earlier this year also opened another $1 billion facility in North Carolina.

This step comes as part of a broader trend by international pharmaceutical companies towards increasing manufacturing within the United States, following calls by US President Donald Trump to reduce dependence on importing pharmaceutical materials from abroad.
During the year 2025, 14 major pharmaceutical companies around the world announced plans to expand their production facilities in the United States, with the aim of strengthening supply chains and reassuring investors in light of the complex commercial environment that the country is witnessing.
