According to what was published by the British newspaper Daily Mail, David Moss said that he was using a metal detector when he picked up a strong signal during a tour with his friend Ian Nicholson, at the end of a rainy day that almost prompted them to stop searching.

He added: After hours of careful digging, we found the first vessel at a depth of about 55 centimeters below the surface of the ground. Then we found a second vessel filled with the same coins, weighing together more than 60 kilograms. The process of extracting the two vessels took approximately 6 hours.
He continued: I spent 3 nights inside my car guarding the two jars for fear of losing them, before I handed them over to the experts in the capital, Cardiff.

Anthony Hales, president of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Numismatic Society, said: This treasure may be the largest of its kind discovered in Wales to date. According to the British Treasures Act of 1996, any discoverer classified as a treasure becomes the property of the British Crown, and a financial reward is given to be divided between the discoverer of the treasure and the landowner if the museums decide to acquire it.
