The Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities announced that the project to treat sludge resulting from the Eastern Purification Sewage Treatment Plant in Alexandria Governorate and convert it into energy has won the “Emirates Energy Award,” which is awarded by the Supreme Council of Energy in the United Arab Emirates once every two years, in appreciation of Egypt’s efforts in applying the latest environmental and technological systems in converting sludge into sustainable energy.
The project is one of the pioneering models implemented by the Executive Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation within the state’s plan to transition to a green economy and achieve environmental sustainability and clean energy, in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.
Sludge treatment and conversion project into energy in Alexandria
Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, said that the Eastern Purification Plant in Alexandria was established in 1993 with a capacity of 200 thousand m³/day with the primary treatment system, then it was developed in 2003 to reach 407 thousand m³/day, and expanded in 2014 to reach 800 thousand m³/day with secondary treatment, and in 2022 a project was implemented to treat the sludge and convert it into energy. In cooperation with the union of “Suez” companies and “Arab Contractors”, bringing the station with a total capacity of 800 thousand m³/day and serving more than 4 million people in the areas east of Alexandria.
He added that the project aims to raise the efficiency of the station and improve its environmental performance by implementing sludge digesters that convert it into biogas (biogas) used to generate electrical energy that covers about 60% of the station’s consumption, in addition to reducing pollution and reducing unpleasant odors by 30% of the volume of sludge produced, drying the digested sludge to reuse it for multiple purposes, and improving the environmental and health situation in the surrounding areas. At the station.
El-Sherbiny explained that the project was partially financed through a loan from the French Development Agency, in support of the international partnership in the fields of renewable energy and wastewater treatment, stressing that the project’s win of this prestigious regional award reflects the Egyptian leadership in managing water and energy resources, and the state’s efforts led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in maximizing the use of waste and transforming it into valuable resources, which contributes to achieving sustainable development goals. Preserving the environment for future generations.
It is noteworthy that the “Emirates Energy Award” is granted by the UAE Supreme Council of Energy once every two years, to honor pioneering initiatives in energy efficiency, alternative energy, sustainability, and environmental protection, and constitutes a regional platform that celebrates distinguished projects that contribute to a more efficient and sustainable future in the use of energy.
