The government had reservations about a draft parliamentary law granting those who do not have political rights the right to be a member of the boards of directors of social and cultural associations, clubs, private bodies working in the field of youth and sports, and private institutions.
The government stated that the proposed draft law clearly conflicts with the public interest, and does not reflect the actual needs of associations and other legal persons subject to the provisions of the Associations Law that aim to promote social, cultural and sports development.
The government stated that the amendment approved under Law No. (36) of 2018 to the text of the proposed draft law reflects a clear vision that meets the aspirations of Bahraini society, enhances the integrity of associations, and ensures effective participation in public life by requiring candidates for membership in their boards of directors to enjoy political rights.
The government stressed that allowing the nomination of individuals who have been deprived of their political rights to membership in these councils would undermine public confidence in their role, in addition to posing a threat to the good reputation of these associations and the public interest.
