Trade escalation between Washington and Beijing confuses the markets

These movements in gold prices come amid a tense atmosphere on the global trade scene, as US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 100% customs duties on all Chinese imports starting next November 1, in response to Beijing’s decision to tighten controls on the export of rare earth elements.

This escalation raised fears of an all-out trade war that could weaken global growth and negatively affect markets, at a time when gold is considered a safe haven for investors in periods of uncertainty.

On the other hand, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said that his country is still open to dialogue, stressing that an upcoming meeting will bring together Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping this month in South Korea. He also indicated the possibility of extending the trade truce if China eases its new restrictions.
