The Ghana national team has officially reserved its place in the 2026 World Cup finals hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, becoming the latest African team to qualify for the World Cup.
The qualification of the “Black Stars” came after their valuable victory over the Comoros Islands with an unanswered goal, in the match that was held on Sunday evening at the Accra International Stadium, in the tenth round of the African qualifiers for the World Cup.
Ghana’s group standings in the World Cup qualifiers
With this victory, the Ghanaian national team ended its qualifying campaign at the top of its group with 25 points, after achieving 8 victories and one draw and one defeat, confirming its right to return to the World Cup after its last participation in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
While the Madagascar national team finished second in the group with 19 points, then it was followed by the Mali national team with 18 points, the Comoros national team with 15 points, the Central African national team with 8 points, and then the Chad national team with one point.
This qualification is a continuation of Ghana’s brilliance in the African continent, as it continues to maintain its position as one of the most prominent African teams on the world stage.
From African exclusion to global… teams changed their fate in the qualifiers
The Ghana national team made up for its failure to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco, in its first absence from the continental tournament since the 2004 Tunisia edition, to qualify for the World Cup, in an incident that has been repeated before with African teams.
The teams of Morocco and Cameroon preceded Ghana in this paradox, as the Atlas Lions missed the 1994 African Nations after occupying third place in a group that included Egypt, Mali, and Malawi, but they compensated for that by qualifying distinguishedly for the 1994 World Cup in America.
In the same year, the Cameroon national team experienced a similar situation, after failing to reach the 1994 African Nations after finishing second in its group behind Gabon. However, it returned strongly in the World Cup qualifiers and qualified for the World Cup to continue its usual presence in the largest international football forum.
Thus, Ghana joins the list of African teams that have written exceptional chapters in history, by compensating for continental failure with a global achievement that confirms its position among the leaders of the African continent.
