Former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama has died at the age of 101. Mizuho Fukushima, head of the Social Democratic Party of Japan, said in a statement that Murayama died in a hospital in Oita, his hometown, in southwestern Japan. As head of what was then known as the Japanese Socialist Party, Murayama led a coalition government from June 1994 until January 1996.
