Engineer Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Sisi Al-Buainain, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives and Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Parliamentary Division, announced that the House of Representatives has obtained the ISO certification for artificial intelligence in parliamentary work, and has passed the international standard (ISO 42001) for the management system for artificial intelligence in the field of parliamentary work, making the Bahraini House of Representatives at the forefront of legislative councils in the region and the world that have obtained this international certificate.
He added that the General Secretariat of the House of Representatives also recently obtained the international ISO certificate (ISO 14001:2015) in the environmental management system, making it the first parliamentary secretariat in the region to achieve this achievement, which reflects its keenness to achieve efficiency in resource management, reduce emissions, and establish a culture of environmental responsibility in the parliamentary work environment.
Stressing that these qualitative achievements came with the support and guidance of Ahmed bin Salman Al Muslim, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who was keen to make the Council a role model in environmental and administrative governance, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, in line with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 and the sustainable development goals.
Pointing out that the achievements achieved by the Kingdom of Bahrain are the result of the sound vision and sublime directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the great king of the country, may God protect and preserve him, who made environmental protection, sustainability, attention to artificial intelligence and its proper investment an integral part of the comprehensive national development approach of the Kingdom of Bahrain. This national trend has received direct support and follow-up from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, may God protect him, who has established a culture of institutional innovation and placed sustainability at the heart of government work priorities.
This came during a meeting of the Assembly of Secretaries-General of Parliaments, which was held in conjunction with the meetings of the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva.
The Secretary-General of the House of Representatives explained that this achievement also comes in line with the directions of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in enhancing the environmental responsibility of legislative institutions, and in line with the “Parliaments for the Planet” campaign launched by the Union, which aims to encourage parliaments to integrate the principles of sustainability into their internal work and external activities alike.
He pointed out during his speech that the Bahraini Parliament, through this initiative, was keen to be an active part in this global trend, and to contribute to consolidating a culture of environmental sustainability among individuals and institutions through tangible practices within the parliamentary work environment.
He said that the “Green Parliament” initiative came from our belief that parliamentary work goes beyond the limits of legislation and oversight, to become an institutional model in national and international trends towards sustainability. Within the framework of this initiative, the General Secretariat teams applied environmental management principles in all Council facilities, including rationalizing energy and water consumption, how to manage waste, reducing the use of paper through modern electronic systems, and raising environmental awareness among employees through specialized training and awareness programs.
The Secretary-General of the House of Representatives noted that “this achievement comes to complete the comprehensive institutional development system pursued by the General Secretariat, by integrating digital transformation with environmental management into a single framework that enhances operational efficiency and contributes to building a smart and sustainable parliament that relies on digital solutions to manage its resources and services.”
Stressing that the experience of the Bahraini Parliament in this field represents a practical model for integrating digital transformation and artificial intelligence with environmental sustainability within an organized institutional framework that keeps pace with global trends towards smart governance and environmentally friendly practices. It is an experience that we hope will contribute to enriching the international parliamentary dialogue on the role of parliaments in supporting sustainable development goals, especially the thirteenth goal related to climate action.
He added: “We view this achievement not as the end of a development path, but rather as a starting point for more pioneering initiatives, as we are currently working to expand the scope of application of sustainability standards to include all aspects of legislative and administrative work, thus enhancing the position of the Bahraini Parliament as a model of institutional leadership.”
