Completion of work in Egypt for the linking project with Sudan… and complete completion in December

An official source at the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy revealed remarkable progress in the work of the second phase of the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Sudan, adding that the second phase of the project aims to raise the capacity from 80 to 300 megawatts, an increase of more than 275%, which will contribute to enhancing opportunities for electrical exchange between the two sides.

The source indicated in statements to Cairo 24 that Egypt has fully completed the implementation of the works for the second phase on its territory, including the supply and installation of the necessary equipment under a contract concluded with the German company “Siemens”, and some installation work remains in Sudanese territory, where “Siemens” will install two units to compensate for the ineffective capacity with a total capacity of 150 megafarm, in the Dongola and Merowe transformer stations, The value of the contract is about $30 million.

The source noted that the full completion of civil and electromechanical works will be by December 2025, followed by the implementation of technical works related to power compensation, with the aim of improving the network’s efficiency and reducing energy loss.

Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, confirms that the electricity and renewable energy sector has expertise, competencies and successful experiences in implementing urgent emergency plans, and that there is cooperation with the Sudanese side and coordination within the framework of the existing connection line to achieve regional integration in the electricity and energy sector, pointing to the importance of exchanging experiences in the fields of renewable energy, rebuilding and rehabilitating electrical networks, and achieving the maximum benefit from natural resources.

He also stressed his keenness to enhance cooperation with Sudan within the framework of joint efforts to achieve energy security in the region and develop the energy infrastructure in the two countries, and interest in spreading the uses of renewable energies, achieving environmental sustainability and reducing dependence on traditional energy sources, praising the distinguished relations between Egypt and Sudan, and continuing to provide training programs to brothers in the Republic of Sudan on the latest global technologies in the fields of electricity and energy, explaining the joint work between the two countries. To provide electrical supply and meet the requirements of sustainable development plans.
