Ibrahim Al-Sajini, head of the Consumer Protection Agency, held an expanded meeting today at the agency’s main headquarters, in the presence of heads of sectors and directors of regional branches in the governorates, to follow up on the repercussions of implementing the new prices for petroleum products, review the executive position on the state of the markets and the availability of basic goods and services, ensure price stability and prevent any attempts to exploit citizens in light of the current changes.
This came in the presence of Mohamed Yasser Naguib, Executive Director, Major General Mahmoud Al-Sayed, General Supervisor of Markets Control and Security, Hani Nabhan, Director of the General Administration of the Cairo Branch, Sherif Tawfik, Director of the General Administration of Market Control, Mustafa Abdel Sattar, Director of the General Administration of Legal Affairs, and Ashraf Adel, Director of the General Administration of Services.
An important statement from Consumer Protection regarding prices in the markets
The head of the Consumer Protection Agency stressed that field supervision represents one of the agency’s most important tools in protecting citizens and controlling markets, stressing his directive to intensify oversight campaigns and the continuous field presence of the agency’s teams in all governorates. To follow up on the commitment of sales outlets and service providers to the prescribed prices, and to immediately confront any attempts to exploit citizens or impose unjustified price increases.
He also directed all regional branches to submit immediate and periodic reports to the operations room on the executive position in the markets, allowing for rapid intervention and taking deterrent legal measures against any attempts at manipulation or uncontrolled commercial practices, stressing the need for the presence and field visits of heads of sectors, directors of regional branches, and judicial police officers in the governorates, and carrying out inspection tours. On an ongoing basis to ensure the availability of goods and control the movement of markets, in full coordination with the relevant executive and supervisory bodies within each governorate.
Ibrahim Al-Sajini indicated that the operations room follows up around the clock field monitoring reports received from the regional branches. To determine the level of availability of goods and services and price stability in all governorates, and to immediately deal with any practices that would harm the rights of consumers or violate market controls and fair competition.
In this context, Al-Sijini stressed that the continuous efforts made by the state in reducing inflation rates and improving macroeconomic indicators contributed to controlling the movement of markets and stabilizing commodity prices and their availability in a balanced manner, noting that the noticeable decline in the dollar exchange rate during the recent period reflects the success of economic policies in achieving a greater degree of balance and stability in the local market, stressing the need for all parties to commit not to exploit any price variables. To achieve illegal gains at the expense of the consumer, thus establishing the principles of fair competition.
The head of the Consumer Protection Agency sent a clear message to the chambers of commerce and all merchants, in which he stressed the necessity of full commitment to the explicit announcement of the prices of goods and services, stressing that there are no justifications for increasing prices in light of the effective measures taken by the state to curb inflation and stabilize the exchange rate of the dollar following its decline, indicating that these efforts require all parties to assume their national responsibilities in supporting market stability. Commitment to the principles of transparency in dealing with citizens, in a way that enhances trust and achieves a balance between the interests of the consumer and the merchant.
He stressed that the agency will not tolerate any violations or practices that would harm the rights of consumers or disrupt the market balance, stressing that anyone proven to be involved in exploiting citizens or raising prices without justification will be subjected to immediate and deterrent legal measures, within the framework of an integrated supervisory system aimed at achieving justice and discipline within the Egyptian markets.
The head of the agency also appealed to citizens not to follow some behaviors that affect the prices of goods, such as storing goods and buying in quantities that exceed the actual need, explaining that storing goods excessively contributes to creating an unreal demand that leads to market turmoil and an unjustified increase in prices, stressing the availability of all basic goods in the markets, and that state agencies closely follow the movement of goods availability and control the markets, in coordination with the concerned authorities, to ensure There will be no shortage or unjustified increase in prices.
He called on citizens to immediately report any harmful practices or unjustified price increases via the hotline (19588), or through the “Consumer Protection” application on smart phones, stressing that citizens’ reports represent an essential element in the system of oversight and rapid intervention to protect consumer rights and control markets.
