In the village (7) in the FAO locality in the state of Gedaref, in eastern Sudan, 251 km east of Khartoum, and in a scene that reduces the cruelty of human suffering, the tragedy of a Sudanese family turned into a public opinion issue, after ten of its members lost their entire sight as a result of their genetic “glucoma”, known popularly as “black water”.
While others from the same family face the same fate with a sharp weakness in looking at full blindness, according to what Al Arabiya.net reported.
Despite the horror of the tragedy, the family, consisting of 31 individuals, is suffering from very difficult living conditions, as it is burdened with debt and the costs of treatment, in the absence of any serious official support, with the exception of some government visits and promises that have not turned into reality.
The beginning of the story
Sibawayh according to God, Adam, a family member, tells Al -Arabiya.net that the journey of suffering started with his father at the age of twelve years, when he was symptoms of severe weakness in looking during the grazing of sheep, before it rapidly evolved into a complete loss of sight.
He added, “Initially, we resorted to popular therapists, then my father and my brother Joseph traveled to Khartoum in 2005, where it turned out that the disease was a genetic glucoma.”
The spread of the disease among the children
The matter did not stop at the father, as the disease soon began to spread inside the family. The older brother, Yusuf, lost his eyesight, then Sibawayh followed him, then he was followed by five of his sisters, to the youngest brother Hisham. Although a number of them underwent surgeries in specialized hospitals in Khartoum, doctors’ attempts did not succeed in stopping the progress of the disease, so that the situation stabilizes at ten completely blind, while others remain on the brink of blindness.
The child is born with a natural visual ability, but as soon as he reaches the age of seven or eight, he has signs of poor vision, gradually developing until it reaches complete vision loss.
Daily life is arduous
Despite the cruelty of the experience, the family tries to adapt to its reality. “We have never used a blind stick,” said Sibaway. We practice our lives naturally.
“I and some of my brothers work in weaving the traditional beds locally known as” al -Anbar “made of raw wood and tightened with ropes from palm fronds or plastic ropes.”
As for the father, he worked in multiple professions before he was exhausted by his health due to diabetes.
While the youngest son, Hisham, suffered a severe psychological trauma, but today he continues to study with the help of his teachers.
In a video clip, Father Hassaballah Adam confirmed that the doctors informed him twenty years ago that all of his children would be blind, which was gradually achieved.
Economic burden suffocating
The family tragedy is exacerbated by living pressures. “We live on debts, and we have financial obligations towards the health center,” Sibawayh says. We have not received any fixed government support, just not implemented promises. “
Condolences
Despite the difficulties, the family found its consolation in faith and the Holy Qur’an, as Sibawayh and most of his sisters completed the memorization of the Qur’an in the cells of the state of the island.
He says: “We thank God for any case. We have made this affliction closer to the Book of God, and more satisfied with the judiciary and destiny.”
