Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani said on Saturday that Syria is dealing with the Russian file rationally and carefully.
In an interview with the Syrian Al-Ikhbariya channel, details of which were reported by the Syrian News Agency, Al-Shaibani said that Syria “deals with the Russian file rationally and carefully, based on the principle of preserving national sovereignty and not allowing the return of any form of subordination or dependency.”
He added: “The agreements concluded by the former regime with the Russian side are still under evaluation, and no new agreements have been approved yet.”
He pointed out that “the ongoing consultations regarding the Russian military presence in Syria aim to redefine the nature of this presence and its role in the next stage, in a way that guarantees Syria’s interests and preserves the independence of its national decision-making.”
Al-Shaibani stated that the relationship with Russia and China must be harnessed for the benefit of the Syrian people, adding: “We have re-corrected the relationship with China, which was politically standing by the former regime and using its veto in its favor, and at the beginning of next month there will be the first official visit to Beijing at the official invitation of the Chinese government.”
