A team from Al-Azhar University Hospital in Assiut succeeded in saving the life of an infant suffering from an esophageal obstruction with a fistula between the esophagus and the trachea, which caused severe difficulty breathing and the inability to breastfeed from the first day of birth.
Dr. Ibrahim Shaalan, Dean of the Assiut Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University Hospital, stated that the hospital responded immediately to a complaint referred from the complaints system at the Council of Ministers, including the case of the infant, who was referred from one of Qena’s hospitals, where the nursery department received the child, and all necessary measures and preparations were taken, including medical examinations, x-rays, and analyzes before the operation was performed.

The Dean of the College of Medicine added that the x-rays and examinations clearly confirmed the complete obstruction of the esophagus with the presence of a large fistula, which hastened the child’s entry into the operating room to perform one of the most complex pediatric surgeries, requiring precision and high skill from the surgical team.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine indicated that the medical team was able, after 4 hours of continuous surgical work, to completely separate the fistula from the trachea, completely reconnect the esophagus, and install a central venous catheter to provide the infant with treatment after the operation. He confirmed that the child emerged from the operations in a stable and excellent condition, offering thanks to the medical team for this achievement and to the administration of Al-Azhar University. The medical team participating in the surgery included: Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Fattah, Head of Surgery Departments, and Ed. Ahmed Al-Shami, Head of the Pediatric Surgery Unit, and Dr. Mahmoud Abdel Hadi, teacher of pediatric surgery and Dr. Mahmoud Yasser, resident physician in pediatric surgery, and the anesthesia team included: Dr. Wahid Muhammad, teacher of anesthesia and intensive care, and Dr. Mahmoud Talaat Dr. Ahmed Atef, in addition to the nursing staff.
